How Japanese Car Auctions Work

5 min read

An overview of how vehicles move through Japan's auction houses and what that means for a buyer in Bangladesh.

Where the vehicles come from

Most used vehicles exported from Japan pass through auction houses, where sellers list vehicles and registered members bid on them. Each vehicle is inspected by the auction house and described on an auction sheet.

Because bidding is time-limited, buyers usually rely on the auction sheet, photographs and an exporter's judgement rather than a physical viewing.

The role of an exporter or agent

Only registered members can bid. A buyer in Bangladesh therefore works with a company that has access, reviews the listings, and bids on the buyer's behalf within an agreed limit.

Requirements, availability and fees can change, so any figures should be confirmed for the specific vehicle at the time of purchase.

What happens after a successful bid

The vehicle is paid for, collected, prepared for export and booked onto a vessel. Documentation is then prepared for customs clearance in Bangladesh.

Timelines depend on shipping schedules, port conditions and government processing, and are not guaranteed.
